Christmas music

Think of the carol as a conversation between

  • the King (ALL BASSES – IN BLACK, AND SINGING THE TUNE) and
  • his Page (ALL TENORS  – in RED, AND SINGING THE TUNE ) ,
  • together with description of the scene of what is happening (ALL CHOIR SINGING IN HARMONY – IN BLUE)

Verse 1

All choir – in harmony. Description – set the scene

Good King Wenceslas looked out on the Feast of Stephen,

When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even.

Brightly shone the moon that night, though the frost was cruel

When a poor man came in sight gathering winter fuel.

Verse 2

All Basses – singing the tune, not harmony.  King is speaking, asking a question.

“Hither page, and stand by me , if thou know’st it, telling

Yonder peasant , who is he? Where and what his dwelling?”

All Tenors  –  page replies . Singing the tune, not harmony

“Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain;

Right against the forest fence, By St Agnes’ fountain”

Verse 3

All Basses – singing the tune, not harmony.  King is speaking, giving a command.

“Bring me flesh and bring me wine, bring me pine logs hither,

Thou and I will see him dine, when we bear them thither”

All Choir – In harmony. Description of action

Page and Monarch forth they went, forth they went together,

Through the rude winds wild lament, and the bitter weather.

Verse 4 (Soft)

All tenors- Singing the tune, not in harmony. The Page making a statement.

“Sire the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger.

Fails my heart, I know not how; I can go no longer.”

All basses,- singing the tune, not harmony. King is telling the Page to get a grip!!

“ Mark my footsteps, good my page, tread thou in them boldly;

Thou shalt find the winter’s rage, freeze thy blood less coldly”

Verse 5

All choir-  in harmony. Summary and message of the story

In his master’s steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted.

Heat was in the very sod which the Saint had printed.

Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth and rank possessing

Ye who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing.

O Holy Night (B2 only in Bold) lyrics. Check the written score for your own parts.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining;
It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices!
O night divine when Christ was born!
O night divine divine, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend!

He knows our need, He guardeth us from danger,

Behold your King before him lowly bend,

Behold your King before him lowly bend.

Work is in progress to catalogue the choir music for easy access and reference by computer as required. Each piece will eventually be available in MP4 format to view, and listen to for each choral part.

A long and difficult task is under way over the coming months, so you may see progressive changes to these files.
